Regular cleaning and maintenance of your vaping device is the easiest way to ensure peak performance and an optimal vaping experience. Without proper cleaning, e-liquid can accumulate and clog your coil, resulting in diminished flavour and vapour production. In this article, we will discuss how to properly clean and maintain your vaping device.

Why is cleaning and maintenance important?

As mentioned above, neglecting to clean your vape can result in lacklustre performance and flavour. However, this is not the only reason you should be practicing proper maintenance. Regular cleaning helps remove residue, dirt, and bacteria that can accumulate over time. This promotes better hygiene and reduces the risk of potential health issues or infections. Regular cleaning and maintenance can also extend the lifespan of your vaping device. For example, when you keep your coils clean, you will have to replace them less frequently, saving you time and money. Cleaning your vape also provides you with an opportunity to inspect it for any signs of damage or wear. Regular maintenance allows you to identify and address potential issues before they become safety concerns. By establishing a cleaning and maintenance routine, you can enjoy a safer, more satisfying vaping experience while prolonging the life of your device.

How to Clean and Maintain Your Vaping Device

Different devices may have unique requirements, so it is important to read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and maintaining your specific vaping device. However, the following is a general guide for cleaning and maintaining vaping devices.

Cleaning The Vape Tank

The first step is to disassemble your vape tank for efficient cleaning. Begin by carefully removing the coil. We will delve into coil cleaning techniques later on. Before disassembling the rest of the tank, you may want to take a picture or take mental notes of how the pieces fit together so that you can reassemble it correctly later. Some of the pieces are very small and can get easily lost, so it is a good idea to store them in a bowl or bag while disassembling. There are multiple techniques for cleaning a vape tank but the following techniques have proven to be highly effective.

Water Rinse

For a tank that is relatively clean, a water rinse may be all that is needed. Simply place each part under running water and then place them on a piece of paper towel to air-dry. If there is any stubborn residue, you can fill a bowl with warm water and soak the piece in the bowl for a few minutes before allowing them to air-dry. It is important to ensure the parts are completely dry with no visible condensation before reassembling your device.

PG Rinse

A slightly stronger alternative to water is soaking your tank in propylene glycol. Similar to the above technique, fill a cup or bowl with PG and soak your tank in it for 1-2 hours and then place it on a piece of paper towel to air dry. While this option is more time consuming, it does a superior job at removing leftover flavour. Some flavours tend to be more stubborn, and a water rinse would not sufficiently remove them. Mint, and e-liquids that mimic tobacco or coffee flavours are particularly challenging to eliminate completely.

Use a Cleaning Agent

Household items like baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice and even vodka are effective agents for an even deeper clean. It is important to remember to thoroughly rinse your tank with water after application. While we did mention Vodka as an option, it is important to note that isopropyl alcohol should not be used on the inside of your tank.

Ultrasonic Cleaners

If you want to get the most thorough clean possible for your vape tank, you can invest in an ultrasonic cleaner. Ultrasonic cleaners, originally used for cleaning jewellery and precious metals, use high-frequency sound waves to produce cavitation bubbles that dislodge dirt, residue, and contaminants from the vaping device components. After a cycle in the ultrasonic cleaner, rinse them thoroughly with clean water to remove any remaining cleaning solution or debris. Once rinsed, allow the components to air dry completely before reassembling and using them.

Cleaning Your Coils

There are two varieties of replaceable coils. Coil heads for tanks are encased in a small metal chamber that contains an absorbent wick. Coils for rebuildables require the user to install the wick. Each of these coil types require a unique approach to cleaning.

While coil heads can be cleaned using the soak and rinse method, it will not completely revive them. Instead, it will only extend their life a couple additional days. This can be helpful if you are in a situation where you are unable to buy a replacement and are looking to get a few extra days out of your existing coil. Soak the coil in ethanol, vinegar, or vodka for a few hours, followed by rinsing it in tap water and a final rinse in distilled water. You must then wait for water to fully evaporate before reassembling your device.

However, if you are using a rebuildable atomizer, you should be cleaning your coil regularly.  The first step is to remove the wick from your coil. If your coil is relatively clean, dry burning may do the trick. Dry burn the coil by pulsing the fire button on your device without inhaling. This will heat the coil and burn off some of the gunk. Repeat this process a few times.

If dry burning is not sufficient, remove the atomizer from your mod and place it under running water. Brush it lightly with a toothbrush or a coil cleaning tool. Rinse once again and allow time to dry before reassembling.

While cleaning a coil can extend its lifespan, coils will eventually degrade and need replacement. It is important to regularly monitor the condition and performance of your coil and replace it when necessary to maintain a satisfactory vaping experience.

Keeping Your Vaping Device Clean and Well-Maintained

Proper cleaning and maintenance of your vaping device is vital for ensuring a safe and enjoyable vaping experience. Regular maintenance, including cleaning the tank, coil, and other components, helps optimize flavour, performance, and battery safety. Remember to consult the manufacturer's instructions and recommendations specific to your device.
