A Beginner’s Guide to Sub-Ohm Vaping
April 27, 2023

With an increasing number of sub-ohm tank options available on the market, sub-ohm vaping has grown in popularity over the past few years. However, for those who may be unfamiliar with this vaping practice, it can feel overwhelming and confusing. That's why in this blog post we will discuss the fundamentals of sub-ohm vaping and some tips for getting started.

What Does Sub-Ohm Mean?

The resistance of a vaping coil is measured in Ohms. Most standard coils have a resistance of between 1.2 to 2.0 ohms. Sub-Ohm vaping involves using a coil with a resistance of less than 1 ohm.

What is the Difference?

Lower resistance coils allow more electrical current to flow. Meaning, the coils get hotter and heat up faster. As a result, more e-liquid is vaporized, producing larger vapour clouds and a stronger throat hit compared to regular vaping.

Does Sub-Ohm Vaping Require Special Equipment?

Regular vaping devices are not designed to handle the increased power demands of sub-ohm coils. Therefore, sub-ohm vaping requires special equipment to be done safely and effectively.  These unique devices are referred to as "sub-ohm tanks" or "sub-ohm mods."  The larger air holes on sub-hhm devices are essential to allow enough airflow to cool the coil and the vapour. Without the larger air holes, the vapour can  overheat, making the vaping experience very unpleasant. You’ll also need a vape battery that can handle higher power. To ensure longer battery life, look for batteries with a minimum continuous discharge rate of 20 amps and a high mAh rating.

Along with a sub-ohm compatible device, sub-ohm vapers will also need specific types of e-liquids that are formulated to work with the higher power and lower resistance coils. E-liquids suitable for sub-ohm vaping are typically high in vegetable glycerin (VG) and have a lower nicotine strength. Therefore, sub-ohm devices also need to be able to accolade the thickness of the e-liquid.

E-Liquids and Sub-Ohm Vaping

As explained earlier, sub-ohm vaping provides a stronger ‘hit’ than traditional vaping due to the coil getting hotter and vaporizing more e-liquid. Therefore, it is generally recommended to use e-liquids with lower nicotine levels compared to traditional vaping. For sub-ohm vaping, it's best to use e-liquids with nicotine strengths ranging from 0mg to 6mg. Although optimal nicotine strength varies based on factors like personal preference and smoking history, staying within this range will provide a satisfying throat hit without causing adverse effects like nausea or headaches. It's recommended to start with a lower nicotine strength and increase gradually until you find a level you are comfortable with.

Additionally, sub-ohm vaping requires using an e-liquid with a higher concentration of VG. Determining the ideal PG to VG ratio depends on personal preference and the specific sub-ohm setup you are using. However, a popular ratio among sub-ohm vapers is 30% PG and 70% VG. This ratio will ensure a good balance of throat hit, flavour and cloud production.

Pros and Cons of Sub-Ohm Vaping

Sub-ohm vaping has become increasingly popular among the vaping community, but it also comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.  Along with the large clouds of vapour, fans of sub-ohm vaping cite the warmer vapour and a more intense flavour experience as key reasons for their enjoyment. On the other hand, the cons of sub-ohm vaping include higher e-liquid consumption, shorter battery life and shorter coil life. Additionally, sub-ohm vaping may require a change in inhale technique.
